St. Augustine mosaic artists, Wendy Mandel McDaniel and Jan Tomlinson Master have lived in the city for over twenty years. They were commissioned by architects Fred Halback and Les Thomas to create an impactful mosaic to greet the millions of people who enter the St. Augustine Visitors Information Center every year. The mosaic is a map of historic St. Augustine circa 1700 surrounded by historically and naturally significant iconography. A Timacua chief sits in the center of the bottom border with the corn tributes above and a mixture of nature is woven throughout the mosaic. The Spanish ship sits above with celestial constellations behind and the waves the road in on surrounding them.
