Inspired by Pier Park’s vibrancy the City of St. Augustine Beach, the St. Augustine Civic Association, and the SJCC executive director, Christina Parrish Stone, wanted an equally vibrant mural to reflect the history, wildlife, and community. In the summer of 2024, the St. Augustine Civic Association put forward its building as a canvas and Parrish Stone brought Live Wildly Foundation on board as a co-sponsor.
Together the organizations selected Ponte Vedra artist, Brook Page, to paint a mural inspired by the Flora and Fauna of St. Augustine Beach. Brook Page is a native of St. Johns County artist who attended SCAD and developed a colorful contemporary style that blends realism with a kaleidoscope of colors and textures. Her color choices and love of her subject matter help create works that connect to her audiences’ nostalgic heartstrings.
She worked on several public and private mural projects before taking on the Civic Association’s walls. “Our Wild Life” features multiple animals native to Anastasia Island and surfboards as a nod to the pier’s lush surf history. The final piece beautifully embodies the essence of St. Augustine Beach’s natural environment and the Live Wildly mission, which was accomplished with the public’s support. Following the completion of the mural the SJCC sponsored a search for a title that captured Page’s work. With the help of the public contest the title “Our Wild Life” submitted by St. Johns resident, Gina Fiore, was chosen by the SJCC and Brook Page.
Whether you’re visiting St. Augustine Beach, a free outdoor concert, or a local, “Our Wild Life” is a mural you should stop by when you’re in the area.
Back Story of Pier Park
St. Augustine Beach Pier saw a resurgence between 2000 and 2024. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the City of St. Augustine Beach and the St. Johns Cultural Council, a place with a rich history has been revitalized for the community. In fact, the St. Johns Cultural Council (SJCC) was born from this very passion project. The founding members and staff saved the St. Augustine Beach Hotel (c. 1939) from certain demolition and started the restoration.
Through grants and fundraising efforts, the SJCC restored the building and earned a place on the national public registry while transforming the hotel into a cultural center. St. Augustine Beach Hotel has been hailed “the Jewel of St. Augustine Beach” by the City of St. Augustine Beach’s commissioners. Through additional projects like the splash pad and events like the Music and Art By the Sea series sponsored by the SJCC, the community has been invited to enjoy St. Augustine Beach’s Pier Park again.
