ShepardFest brings you Thunderheart, starring Val Kilmer, Sam Shepard, and Graham Greene. The film is co-presented by the St. Augustine Film Festival, and author, Robert Dowling, will lead a post-screening talkback.
Thunderheart (1992) is a neo-Western mystery about Ray Levoi (Val Kilmer), a young, ambitious FBI agent of mixed Sioux heritage. Sent to a tense, poverty-stricken South Dakota Sioux reservation to investigate a murder, Levoi gradually rejects his bureau's corrupt tactics, reconnects with his roots, and embraces his indigenous heritage. The film was directed by Michael Apted and is a fictionalized drama loosely inspired by real events, such as the 1973 Wounded Knee incident and the conflicts between the FBI and the American Indian Movement (AIM).
